FAQs What are the signs of dyslexia? Any one of these signs can have other causes and explanations, but forgetfulness, lack of organization, surprising difficulty with reading, writing and spelling, significantly stronger oral than written skills, slow writing, difficulties with copying accurately, frustration and lack of confidence can all be signs of an underlying problem such as dyslexia.
Does dyslexia run in families? Experience certainly suggests that dyslexia runs in families. It is extraordinary how many parents report similar difficulties in other family members - often male members, but not exclusively so.
Are boys more likely to be affected than girls? This has traditionally been the assumption although over recent years more girls do seem to be presenting with dyslexia. One theory is that girls are better at concealing and finding ways round such difficulties but there is no clear evidence of this.
Is dyslexia always obvious at a young age? Although there may be suspicions from quite an early age, it can be some time before the demands of academic work become so great that the underlying dyslexic difficulties pose a serious enough problem for a definite identification to be made.
